Waiting to Exhale-Taking the Time for the Time Between

Normally this week "between" the holidays is a time that we all start the annual rear view mirror exercise...and then we go hunting for our crystal balls to see what will come. This year, no way!  The annual  "year in review" is NOT something I want to do, who does?  Best to toss this one in the dustbin and light a match! As for the crystal ball I don't have the courage I admit to even go dig mine out this year. It seems like everyone is just holding our collective breath, waiting for the moment when the world can exhale. Yet, it is hard not to look back, it is hard not to think about what might be. Trying to get your head around a year that no one can make sense of and to try to just sit and  understand- the extraordinary losses, all the pain. It is inevitable that we feel the need to look  for the lessons and search with earnest for the hope that must be.  So now as we step oh so gingerly into a new year there are a whole lot of "what nexts".  By nature and attitude I am an optimist, I admit that the optimism  has slipped as  I spend far too much time watching, listening and reading the news. My optimism needs to be nurtured and it needs to find a path with a purpose.  That's a lot to take in before midnight chimes on the 31st. Usually at this time the month of December is one BIG blur, this December all of 2020 is one big blur and everything is spinning. My brain is pleading "can we  just hit PAUSE please!"

I have always adored this week best of all.  The time between when all I should really need to think about, at least for today, is where my book is and whether I should watch Season Four of The Crown , or Bridgerton , or binge watch all that TCM has served up, or read the gi-normous pile of books by my bedside that seem to  have been there since...2019. Maybe I'll knit? How about a hat with giant pompom or wait there are a hundred projects that need finishing, just one more sleeve, how about that needlepoint pillow from...what ever became of that? Don't forget to pot the Amaryllis bulbs... Sure there is some mail to open, bookeeping to do -who wants to look at those numbers!, certainly bills to be paid, dusting and laundry, closets and cupboards to clean out for donation boxes, oh yeah and a whole year ahead to figure out...but for this week I'm taking MY time in  between!

I may not be able to go to the museum or the movies or the theatre, sit over brunch or even poke through holiday sales at favorite shops, but I can close down the laptop and the endless stream of useless emails and try to find ME in the pile of neglected and ignored. The NEW, and oh please the better, year will be here soon enough and with it a world we cannot still make sense of, this week does not solve too much there, but one thing for sure it will be spiraling and we will all need to be involved and CARE!  The New Year will come with us all walking without a steady road beneath us and with a whole new list, albeit very different from New Year's lists past, of "DO ITS".   So while the phones and email are relatively still, while the world holds its collective breath for what will be, I will be too...No looks back, no projecting forward, just today.  Enjoy the time in between...comes but just once a year!  ...and may the New Year bring only health, joy and peace to all!

A Breath Between

As New Year's Eve approaches we all start the annual rear view mirror exercise...and then we search for our crystal balls to see what will come. Not sure after 2017 I want that crystal ball.  What results- some regrets, some smiles, some sadness, tons of worry and fear tossed in too... As hardly a day went by in 2017 when we didn't find ourselves in complete and total  disbelief and now we step oh so gingerly into a new year with a whole lot of "what nows".  That's a lot to take in before midnight chimes. The month of December is one BIG blur.  It seems as if sometime around Halloween someone shouts GO! and away we're off to the races.  It's a whirlwind of plans, events, deadlines, GET IT DONES,  fires to put out just in the "Nick" of time... and a snowstorm of shopping bags, ribbon, stamps, cards, packages, flour, sugar, sprinkles, twinkles and...

That is why I adore this week best of all.  The time between when all I need to think about, at least for today, is where my book is and whether I should watch Season Two of The Crown , The Marvelous (and it truly is!)Mrs. Maisel or read the gi-normous pile of books by my bedside that seem to  have been there since the summer...or maybe I'll knit a hat-giant pompom and all??? Sure there is mail to open, bills to be paid, dusting and laundry, closets and cupboards to clean out for donation boxes and...but for this week I'm taking my time in  between!  2018 will be here soon enough and with it a world spiraling and we will all need to be involved and CARE!  The New Year will come with us all walking without a steady road beneath us and with a whole new list of "DO ITS".   So while the phones and email are relatively still I will be too...No looks back, no projecting forward, just today.  Enjoy the time in between...comes but just once a year!  ...and may the New Year bring peace to all!

Not Back, Not Forward, Just the Time Between!

As New Year's Eve approaches we start the annual rearview mirror exercise...and then we search for our crystal balls to see what will come. What results- some regrets, some smiles, some sadness and a whole lot of "what nows".  That's a lot to take in before midnight chimes. The month of December is one BIG blur...it seems as if sometime around Halloween someone fires off a starting shot and away we go.  It's a whirlwind of plans, events, deadlines, GET IT DONES,  fires to put out just in the "Nick" of time... and a snowstorm of shopping bags, ribbon, stamps, cards, packages, flour, sugar, sprinkles, twinkles and... That is why I adore this weekend best of all.  The time between when all I need to think about, at least for today, is where my book is and whether I should watch a meaningless Pats game or revisit the past season of Downton Abbey before the finale season begins.  Sure there is mail to open, bills to be paid, dusting and laundry, and...but for this weekend I'm taking my time in  between!  2016 will be here soon enough with a whole new list of DO ITS so while the phones and email are relatively still I will be too...No looks back, no projecting forward, just today.  Enjoy the time in between...comes but just once a year!  ...and may the New Year bring peace to all!

"To Make an End is to Make a Beginning"

"We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives...not looking for flaws, but for potential."
- Ellen Goodman

Anyone who knows me well will tell you I don't do birthdays (mine anyway) and I never ever do New Year's!  Sure, I will wish one and all the happiest and healthiest for the coming year, but to celebrate that another year of my life has zipped by--nope!  You can find me in my bunny slippers by 8pm with a book and a favorite old movie on New Year's Eve- just another night.  So it goes without saying that I do not do resolutions either... but I do do Lists-lots and lots and lots of lists.  As a hopeless romantic and dreamer lists are a way to keep it all organized and even though on my 14 for 14 List there are plenty of wishes and dreams there are also the things that must be done--how did strolling through the Tuileries and sailing Santorini get in there??

T.S. Eliot wrote that to "...make an end is to make a beginning." I do believe in beginnings and that does mean closing some doors-often big heavy ones that have been left open too long.  This is scary and overwhelming to think about doing so I plan to kick those doors shut a little at a time...and who knows where the new doors marked beginnings may go.
I certainly know the doors to close and I think I know the doors I want opened in the New Year... but forcing them may not be the best plan.  So I have a better plan-
Que Sera Sera!!

Planning is good but I left lots of room for "What Will Be Will Be"--Thank you Doris Day for that!!   Lists are all well in good and they can indeed provide direction and a path for planning... but how important is it to always be open to the surprises, be welcoming of the unexpected--this is why I always wear mascara even to pick up the mail--ya just never know!!

So onward -bright shiny new calendars, clean desks, new notebooks, perhaps a pair of new shoes or a new bag...not an organized closet yet though-but that is why there is January!...
and let's see what will be!!!

May all your lists, wishes, dreams, hopes, promises and beginnings be realized and may the unexpected and the surprises bring you joy in the New Year!
